Due to an OWI incident in late July, Wirfs was suspended for the season opener versus Northern Illinois prior to his second campaign. Following his sophomore year, Wirfs beat Brandon Scherff’s Hawkeyes hang-clean record, establishing a new benchmark at 450 pounds. Additionally, he stated that his junior season would be centered around applying his strength training skills to the field. Wirfs missed several weeks of practice due to an injury sustained during spring training. Wirfs declared that he would forego his senior season and pursue the 2020 NFL Draft after his junior year, in which he was named to the First Team All Big Ten and the conference lineman of the year.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers selected Wirfs with the 13th pick in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft.

Growing up in a low-income neighborhood next to a trailer park, Wirfs was raised by a single parent. Wirfs was taken into custody on July 29, 2018, for operating a vehicle while inebriated.

Wirfs was a standout wrestler and track & field athlete at Mount Vernon High School, where he also played football.
