Timeline

Netflix approved the fourth season of Stranger Things on September 30, 2019. Netflix also revealed that the Duffers had inked a nine-figure contract with them for numerous years of upcoming movies and TV series.

A grip who worked on the Stranger Things set accused the Duffer Brothers in March 2018 of verbally abusing them. Because the Duffer Brothers fostered a toxic work atmosphere for women, the crew member announced on social media that she would not be returning for Season 3. The brothers vehemently refuted this assertion, and Netflix’s investigation revealed no misconduct. The brothers faced criticism earlier for encouraging young actress Sadie Sink to act out an unplanned kissing scene. Sink, though, claimed she didn’t object.

When it was published on July 15, 2016, it received overwhelmingly positive reviews, particularly for its acting, direction, screenplay, characters, pacing, atmosphere, and references to 1980s genre movies. It also started to gain a cult following on the internet. Based on 82 reviews, the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes gave the series a 95% approval rating with a weighted average score of 7.96/10. “Exciting, heartbreaking, and sometimes scary, Stranger Things acts as an addictive homage to Spielberg films and vintage 1980s television,” is how the site’s critics generally describe the show. The show received a second season renewal from Netflix on August 31, 2016, with nine new episodes premiering on October 27, 2017. The show received a third season renewal from Netflix in December 2017, and its eight episodes debuted on July 4.

In December 2015, Ross Duffer wed director Leigh Janiak in Palm Springs. The pair first connected in 2006 while he was an intern and she was working as the producer’s assistant at a Los Angeles production firm.

Warner Bros. Pictures purchased their script for the post-apocalyptic horror movie Hidden in 2011 after they had written and/or directed many short films. The movie, which was released in 2015, was directed by the brothers in 2012. After reading the script, director M. Night Shyamalan appointed them as writer/producers for the Fox television series Wayward Pines.

Durham, North Carolina is the birthplace and upbringing of the Duffer Brothers. With a Hi8 video camera that their parents had given them as a gift, they started shooting movies in the third grade. From kindergarten through eighth grade, they attended the private suburban Duke School for Children. Afterwards, they transferred to the massive Durham public Charles E. Jordan High School. They moved to Orange, California, to attend the Dodge College of Film and Media Arts at Chapman University, where they completed their film studies in 2007.

The Duffer Brothers, Matt and Ross Duffer (born February 15, 1984), are American writers, filmmakers, and producers of motion pictures and television. The science fiction horror series Stranger Things on Netflix was conceived by them, and they are executive producers of the show. In addition, they created and directed the psychological horror film Hidden (2015), contributed to the writing of Wayward Pines, a Fox mystery-science fiction series, and produced a number of short films, many of which were made while they were students at Chapman University. Being twin brothers, they have been close from childhood and have collaborated on all of their endeavors as a pair.

They started pitching their concept for Stranger Things, which Dan Cohen ultimately took to Shawn Levy, based on their television expertise. Levy’s 21 Laps production firm produced the series, and Netflix snatched it up right away. The show, which is set in 1980s Indiana, pays tribute to that decade’s popular culture, drawing stylistic cues and inspiration from the likes of George Lucas, John Carpenter, Stephen King, and Steven Spielberg.
