Hu went to the 40th Golden Horse Awards in 2003.
Hu became a single mother and gave birth to her only daughter, Hu Jiesheng (胡潔甼), on November 25, 1994. Hu has never identified the child’s biological father in public.
Hu retired up acting in 1986 to concentrate on writing and translating, and she went on to become one of Taiwan’s first New Age pioneers. She has translated books by Ken Wilber, A. H. Almaas, Pema Chödrön, and Jiddu Krishnamurti. She has become known as “a leading figure of Taiwan’s New Age and an inventive individual in the global dissemination of the New Age,” and she has said that women “have a vital role to play in planetary transformation” and are particularly susceptible to New Age philosophy.
Hu wed Taiwanese writer, historian, and politician Li Ao on May 6, 1980. Time even published an article on their love story. Li’s living room served as the venue for their wedding. Hu decided to wear her pajamas as her wedding gown.
However, the couple’s marriage of almost three months (a total of 115 days) ended in divorce on August 28, 1980. Since their divorce, the two have frequently been critical of one another.
Hu won a Golden Horse Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Bai Jingrui’s Far Away From Home in 1977. A year later, Hu starred alongside Chun Hsiung Ko in the historical drama A Teacher of Great Soldiers.
