The Spurs announced on July 23, 2019, that Buford will take over as CEO of the Spurs on September 3, having previously served as general manager. Assistant General Manager Brian Wright will take over in his prior position.

On May 7, 2014, Buford was named the NBA Basketball Executive of the Year for the 2013–14 season. He would go on to win the same title for the 2015–16 campaign.

With the Spurs (1999, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2014), Buford has won five NBA titles; four of those were gained while serving as general manager (2003, 2005, 2007, 2014).

Buford was then brought on by Spurs general manager Gregg Popovich in the summer of 1994 as the team’s head scout, and he has been a member ever since. He was appointed the Spurs Director of Scouting in the summer of 1997, and two years later (1999), he received a promotion to vice president and assistant general manager. After serving as team president for five seasons, he was appointed general manager in 2002.

Buford had a brief career as a collegiate basketball player, attending Texas A&M and Oklahoma State. He graduated from Friends University with a degree. Buford played five seasons at the University of Kansas before joining the Spurs in 1988. He was a part of the coaching staff when the Jayhawks won the 1988 NCAA Championship.

In the summer of 1988, Buford began working with the Spurs as Larry Brown’s assistant coach. He worked as an assistant for the Spurs for four seasons, including the 1989–90 and 1990–91 campaigns during which the team won back-to-back Midwest Division championships. He started serving as Brown’s primary assistant with the Los Angeles Clippers in the summer of 1992. Before transferring to the University of Florida for the 1993–94 season, he played one season with the Clippers.
