Lofton only disclosed his testicular cancer diagnosis to Bruce Pearl, his parents, and a select group of university administrators after the 2007 season ended. The only other player who knew was Lofton’s roommate and teammate Jordan Howell, and that was not even until more than halfway through the 2007–2008 campaign. After failing a random drug test during the 2007 NCAA tournament, he received a diagnosis. It found out that a tumor marker was the cause of the failed test. He subsequently had effective radiation therapy and surgery, and it is currently thought that he is cancer-free.
Lofton was selected to Tennessee’s third team All-America as a freshman. On February 11, 2006, he defeated the University of Georgia 83–78 by making a school record nine three-pointers en route to a career-high 33 points. On December 23, 2006, he defeated the University of Texas 111-105 in overtime, scoring a new career-high 35 points. Lofton was named to the second team of the All-America team for the 2005–2006 campaign.
