During the filming of How the West Was Won (1962), Morgan was severely hurt and nearly died while doing a stunt. During the filming of a firefight on a moving train flatcar filled with logs, one of the chains holding the logs snapped, crushing Morgan and causing him to lose a leg. He had to heal from his injuries for five years. His wife, actress Yvonne De Carlo, took a break from her work to care for him.
Morgan is one of the warrior-slaves who shouts “I’m Spartacus!” in the classic Spartacus (1960) sequence, however he is frequently confused for actor George Kennedy, whom he closely resembles. Kennedy has no connection to the
film.
